3GPP systems refer to the suite of mobile communication systems standardized by the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Established in 1998, 3GPP coordinates the development of globally applicable specifications for cellular networks from GSM and its evolutions through UMTS, LTE, to 5G and beyond. The project brings together telecommunications standard bodies and industry stakeholders to ensure interoperability of equipment and services across markets.

The core outputs of 3GPP are Technical Specifications (TS) and Technical Reports (TR). Standards are published in numbered releases; each release adds features and fixes while maintaining backward compatibility. Major releases align with the evolution of mobile generations (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G) and include numerous incremental enhancements that enable new capabilities and services.

3GPP specifications cover both the radio access network and the core network, with architectures designed to support roaming, interoperation, and scalability. Historically, 2G/3G/4G used RAN configurations with UTRAN and E-UTRAN and an evolving core network (for example, the EPC in 4G). In 5G, the design centers on the New Radio (NR) access and the 5G Core (5GC) with a service-based architecture, emphasizing modular network functions and flexible signaling interfaces.

Organization and process: 3GPP is composed of member organizations worldwide that participate through Working Groups and Technical Specification Groups, commonly referred to as RAN, SA (Service and Systems Aspects), and CT (Core Network and Terminals). Plenary meetings and liaison with ITU ensure alignment with IMT definitions (such as IMT-Advanced and IMT-2020). The resulting specifications underpin most commercially deployed mobile networks and influence device certification and interoperability worldwide.
