2G3G4G

2G3G4G is a shorthand term used to describe the first three generations of mobile network technology: 2G, 3G, and 4G. Collectively, these generations mark the evolution from digital voice and basic data services to broader mobile broadband and Internet access, enabling a wide range of mobile applications, messaging, and media.

2G networks introduced digital voice and basic data services. The core technologies included GSM and its variants, with later enhancements such as GPRS and EDGE providing packet-switched data on top of digital voice. Typical data speeds ranged from a few tens of kilobits per second to a few hundred kilobits per second, enabling features like SMS, basic email, and light web access.

3G brought substantial increases in data capacity and speed to support mobile broadband. Technologies such as UMTS with W-CDMA and CDMA2000 allowed higher data rates, often in the hundreds of kilobits per second for basic access and up to several Mbps with later revisions like HSPA and HSPA+. This enabled more robust web browsing, video calling, and multimedia applications on smartphones and tablets.

4G, implemented primarily through LTE and, in some regions, WiMAX, delivered all-IP networks with much higher speeds and lower latency. Typical user experiences range from tens to hundreds of Mbps, with LTE-Advanced and evolving implementations reaching higher peak rates. 4G supports high-quality video streaming, online gaming, and simultaneous data-heavy services on mobile devices.

Transition and legacy: Many networks continue to operate 2G or 3G in parallel with 4G, especially for coverage in remote areas or for legacy devices.
