3D rendering is the process of generating a three-dimensional image from a two-dimensional model or scene. This process involves complex mathematical calculations and algorithms to simulate the interaction of light with surfaces, textures, and objects within a virtual environment. The output can be a still image or an animation.

The core of 3D rendering involves several stages. First, a 3D model is created, typically using specialized software. This model defines the geometry, shape, and structure of the objects. Next, materials and textures are applied to these models, dictating their surface properties like color, reflectivity, and roughness. Lighting is then set up to illuminate the scene, simulating sources like the sun, lamps, or artificial lights. Finally, the rendering engine calculates how light bounces off surfaces, casts shadows, and creates refractions or reflections, ultimately producing the final image or animation.

Various rendering techniques exist, each with its own strengths and trade-offs in terms of realism and computational cost. Ray tracing, for example, simulates the path of light rays to create highly realistic reflections and refractions.
