The object was discovered on 5 August 2012 by the Pan‑STARRS 1 survey at the Haleakala Observatory in Hawaii, and was given the provisional designation 2012 EN9 before receiving its permanent number. Its orbit is fairly typical of the middle asteroid belt, with a semi‑major axis of approximately 2.8 astronomical units, an eccentricity near 0.12 and an inclination of about 5 degrees with respect to the ecliptic. 376999 has a calculated orbital period of roughly 4.2 years and does not cross the orbit of any planet, so it poses no threat to Earth.
