Plutonium-244 (244Pu) is a heavy, synthetic isotope of plutonium with mass number 244 and atomic number 94. It is produced in very small quantities in laboratories and reactors and is not found in meaningful amounts in nature. Because of its long half-life and radiotoxicity, 244Pu is mainly of interest for scientific research rather than practical applications.

The nucleus decays primarily by alpha emission to uranium-240, reflecting its heavy, highly unstable character. With a half-life on the order of tens of millions of years (approximately 80 million years), 244Pu remains radioactive over geological timescales yet decays slowly enough to persist in trace amounts for extended periods. A minor spontaneous fission branch is considered negligible for most purposes.

In nature, 244Pu is extremely rare on Earth. It is not a significant reactor product, and its natural terrestrial inventory is effectively zero. However, isotopes such as 244Pu have been inferred to have existed in the early solar system, based on measurements of meteorites and other ancient materials. The presence of live 244Pu in the early solar system provides constraints on nucleosynthetic events that contributed material to the Sun’s protoplanetary disk.

Production and study of 244Pu occur in specialized facilities, where it is synthesized by neutron irradiation and subsequent beta decays in very small quantities. Its value lies in nuclear science and cosmochemistry: it serves as a chronometer for studying the timing of nucleosynthetic processes and the formation of the solar system. Due to its rarity and radiotoxicity, it has no practical applications as an energy source or weapon material and is handled only under strict regulatory controls.

Safety concerns include strong radiotoxicity if ingested or inhaled, and alpha radiation requires containment and careful handling.
