One of the defining domestic acts of the year was the Pragmatic Sanction issued by Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI on April 19, 1713. The document sought to ensure the uninterrupted succession of his daughter, Maria Theresa, to the Habsburg hereditary lands, laying the groundwork for future conflicts over succession and contributing to the eventual War of Austrian Succession in the mid-18th century.

Internationally, 1713 saw the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht and related accords, which concluded the War of the Spanish Succession.
