1,1,1-Trifluoroethane, commonly known as HFC-143a, is a colorless, non-flammable gas with the chemical formula C2H3F3. It consists of a trifluoromethyl group attached to a methyl group (CF3-CH3).

Uses: It is primarily used as a refrigerant in domestic and commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning systems, commonly referred to by its refrigerant designation R-143a. It is one of several hydrofluorocarbons developed to replace ozone-depleting chlorofluorocarbons.

Physical and chemical properties: At room temperature it exists as a gas; the boiling point is about -47.6 °C. It has zero ozone depletion potential and a relatively high global warming potential compared with carbon dioxide. It is non-flammable and chemically relatively stable under ambient conditions.

Environmental and regulatory aspects: HFC-143a is subject to international controls on hydrofluorocarbons under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, with phase-down schedules for production and consumption.

Safety: The substance has low acute toxicity, but asphyxiation risk exists in confined spaces through displacement of air; leaks should be contained. It should be used only in well-ventilated areas with proper recovery and leak detection.
