111InDTPAoctreotide is a radiopharmaceutical used in nuclear medicine for diagnostic imaging. It is a conjugate of diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA) and octreotide, labeled with the radioisotope indium-111 (111In). Octreotide is a synthetic analog of the natural hormone somatostatin, which binds to somatostatin receptors. These receptors are often overexpressed on the surface of certain types of tumors, particularly neuroendocrine tumors.

The 111InDTPAoctreotide molecule is administered intravenously. Once in the bloodstream, it circulates and binds to somatostatin receptors on tumor cells. The indium-111 isotope emits gamma rays, which are detected by a gamma camera. This allows for the visualization and localization of tumors that express somatostatin receptors. This imaging technique is known as somatostatin receptor scintigraphy or octreoscintigraphy.

The primary use of 111InDTPAoctreotide is in the diagnosis, staging, and follow-up of neuroendocrine tumors, such as carcinoids, pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors, and small cell lung cancer. It can also be used to assess the extent of disease and to monitor the effectiveness of somatostatin analog therapy. The uptake of the radiotracer in tumor sites indicates the presence of somatostatin receptors. While it is primarily a diagnostic agent, its use is generally limited due to the availability of newer, higher-affinity somatostatin analogs labeled with different radioisotopes, such as 68Ga-DOTATATE.
