It was discovered on 14 September 2000, by astronomers of the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research at the Lincoln Laboratory's Experimental Test Site near Socorro, New Mexico. The Minor Planet Center, which is responsible for the designation of minor planets, assigned it the provisional designation 2000 RY35. It was later numbered as 109021.

The orbit of 109021 is moderately eccentric and inclined, with an orbital period of approximately 4.3 years. Its semi-major axis is about 2.6 astronomical units, placing it in the outer region of the asteroid belt. The asteroid's rotation period is not yet determined, but it is estimated to be around 2.5 hours.

109021 is classified as a C-type asteroid, which means it has a carbonaceous composition. This type of asteroid is believed to be primitive and may contain organic compounds, making it of interest to scientists studying the early solar system and the origins of life.
