1080p1080i refers to two related high-definition formats that share the same display resolution of 1920x1080 but differ in how each frame is drawn. 1080p, or progressive scan, presents the entire image for every frame. 1080i, or interlaced scan, splits each frame into two fields—odd and even lines—that are displayed alternately.

In practical terms, 1080p delivers a full, consistent image each frame, with common progressive frame rates of 24, 30, or 60 frames per second. 1080i composes frames from two interleaved fields, resulting in a field rate typically around 59.94 Hz in NTSC regions and about 50 Hz in PAL regions, which corresponds to roughly 29.97 or 25 frames per second, respectively, when interpreted as full frames.

Usage and compatibility vary by region and service. 1080p is widely used for Blu-ray discs, streaming video, and computer displays, where full-frame images are beneficial for motion clarity. 1080i has historically been common in television broadcasting and some satellite feeds, where interlaced delivery can save bandwidth. Modern displays and devices commonly perform deinterlacing to convert 1080i into a progressive image, and they can upscale or upscale-and-deinterlace any source to 1080p.

Quality considerations center on motion handling and artifact susceptibility. 1080p generally provides crisper motion and better vertical detail, since each frame is complete. 1080i can be efficient for broadcasts but may exhibit aliasing or combing artifacts if the deinterlacing process is poor or the content has rapid movement. The perceived quality depends on the source material, encoding, and display processing.
