ödemen

Ödemen is a term that refers to swelling caused by excess fluid trapped in the body's tissues. This fluid buildup, known as edema, can occur in various parts of the body, including the legs, ankles, feet, hands, and face. While generally not a disease itself, ödemen is often a symptom of an underlying medical condition.

The causes of ödemen are diverse. Localized swelling might result from injury, such as a sprained ankle, or an insect bite. More widespread ödemen can be linked to prolonged standing or sitting, pregnancy, or certain medications. However, more serious underlying issues can also lead to ödemen, including heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease, and venous insufficiency. In these cases, the body's ability to regulate fluid balance is compromised.

Symptoms of ödemen include visible swelling, skin that appears stretched or shiny, and a feeling of tightness. Pitting edema, a common type, occurs when pressing on the swollen area leaves an indentation that slowly fills back in. The treatment for ödemen depends entirely on its cause. Addressing the underlying condition is paramount. This might involve lifestyle changes like reducing salt intake, elevating the affected limb, or wearing compression stockings. In more severe cases, medical intervention to treat the underlying disease is necessary.
