These properties can include temperature, humidity, pressure, wind speed and direction, and chemical composition. Scientists categorize and study these layers to understand atmospheric phenomena, weather patterns, and climate.

The most fundamental division of the atmosphere is into layers based primarily on temperature profiles. The troposphere, the lowest layer, is where most weather occurs and temperature generally decreases with altitude. Above this is the stratosphere, where temperature increases with altitude due to the absorption of ultraviolet radiation by the ozone layer. The mesosphere follows, with temperature decreasing again, and it is where meteors typically burn up. The thermosphere, the next layer, experiences a significant temperature increase due to solar radiation, and it is where auroras occur and where the International Space Station orbits. Finally, the exosphere is the outermost layer, gradually thinning into outer space.

Beyond these broad temperature-defined layers, meteorologists and climatologists often refer to more specific õhukõrguste based on other characteristics. For instance, a layer with high humidity might be identified as a moisture-laden õhukõrguste contributing to precipitation. Similarly, a layer with strong, persistent winds is a significant õhukõrguste for aviation and energy production.
