Åldermärke is a Swedish term that translates to "age spot" or "age mark." It refers to a type of benign skin lesion that commonly appears as a person ages. These marks are typically flat, small, and vary in color from light brown to dark brown or even black. They are most often found on sun-exposed areas of the body, such as the face, neck, shoulders, arms, and hands.

Medically, åldermärken are known as solar lentigines or liver spots. They are caused by prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. UV radiation stimulates the production of melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. Over time, the melanin can accumulate in localized areas, leading to the formation of these pigmented spots. Despite the common English nickname "liver spots," they have no connection to liver function.

Åldermärken are a normal part of the aging process and do not pose any health risks. They are not cancerous and do not typically cause any symptoms. While they are harmless, some individuals may choose to have them removed for cosmetic reasons. Removal methods can include cryotherapy (freezing), laser treatment, or topical creams. It is important to consult a dermatologist to confirm that a skin lesion is indeed an åldermärke and not a more serious condition.
