Überstandardisierung, a German term often translated as "over-standardization," refers to a situation where the application of standards becomes excessively rigid or comprehensive, leading to negative consequences. It describes a state where standardization, a process generally aimed at improving efficiency, consistency, and quality, is taken too far. This can manifest in various contexts, including business processes, product development, and even bureaucratic procedures.

The core issue with überstandardisierung is that it can stifle innovation and flexibility. When every aspect of a process or product is rigidly defined by a standard, there may be little room for creative problem-solving or adaptation to unique circumstances.
