Ögahandkoordination, often translated as eye-hand coordination, refers to the ability of the brain to process visual information and guide the hands in performing a task. This complex neuromuscular skill involves the integration of sensory input from the eyes with motor output from the hands. It is fundamental for a wide range of daily activities, from simple tasks like eating and writing to more complex actions such as playing a musical instrument or participating in sports.

The development of eye-hand coordination begins in infancy. Babies learn to track moving objects with their eyes and reach for them, gradually refining this skill as they grow. This process involves the visual cortex in the brain interpreting the image of an object and the motor cortex sending signals to the muscles in the arms and hands to execute the appropriate movement. Feedback loops are crucial, allowing for adjustments in hand movement based on ongoing visual input.

Difficulties with eye-hand coordination can manifest in various ways, impacting academic performance, athletic ability, and even fine motor tasks. Conditions such as developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are characterized by significant impairments in this area. Conversely, strong eye-hand coordination is a hallmark of skilled performers in many fields. Activities that require precise movements in response to visual cues, like surgery, computer programming, or painting, rely heavily on well-developed eye-hand coordination.
