Õmblusliigid, known in English as types of stitches, refer to the various methods used to join fabric or create decorative patterns with thread. These stitches are fundamental to sewing, whether by hand or machine.

Hand stitches are diverse and can be categorized by their purpose. The running stitch is a simple, in-and-out stitch used for gathering or temporary seams. The backstitch creates a strong, continuous line resembling machine stitching, ideal for durable seams. The whipstitch or overhand stitch is used to join two finished edges or to hem. The blanket stitch, with its distinctive loop, is often used for decorative edging or to prevent fraying. The chain stitch forms a decorative loop, resembling a chain, and can be used for embroidery or as a seam.

Machine stitches are created by sewing machines and are generally more consistent and faster than hand stitches. The most common machine stitch is the straight stitch, which is the basic stitch for constructing garments and other sewn items. The zigzag stitch, characterized by its side-to-side movement, is used for finishing raw edges, creating decorative patterns, and for sewing stretchy fabrics. Other machine stitches include the overlock stitch, which simultaneously sews and finishes a seam to prevent fraying, and various decorative stitches designed for embellishment. The choice of stitch depends on the fabric type, the desired strength, and the aesthetic outcome.
