Återvinningskod, or recycling code, is a system used to identify and categorize different types of materials that can be recycled. These codes are typically found on packaging and products to help consumers and recycling facilities sort waste more effectively. The primary goal of these codes is to facilitate the recycling process and ensure that materials are directed to the appropriate recycling streams.

The most common recycling codes consist of a chasing arrows symbol, often a triangle of three arrows, with a number inside. Each number, ranging from 1 to 7, represents a specific type of plastic or other material. For example, code 1 typically signifies PET (polyethylene terephthalate), commonly used in beverage bottles, while code 2 represents HDPE (high-density polyethylene), found in milk jugs and detergent bottles. Other codes cover materials like PVC, LDPE, PP, PS, and other plastics, as well as paper, metal, and glass.

Beyond plastic, some systems also include codes for other recyclable materials like glass, metal, and paper, often with descriptive text accompanying the symbol.
