þjóðhöfðingja

Þjóðhöfðingja is the genitive plural form of þjóðhöfðingi, an Icelandic noun meaning "head of state." The term refers to the sovereign or ceremonial figure who represents a country and stands as its symbolic leader, as distinct from the day-to-day role of government.

The word is formed from þjóð ("people" or "nation") and höfðingi ("leader" or "chieftain"). In Old Norse and medieval Icelandic, þjóðhöfðingi denoted kings, jarls, or other rulers who exercised sovereignty. In modern usage, it is largely a generic or descriptive term and is most commonly encountered in historical writing or translation rather than as an official title.

In Iceland, the contemporary head of state is the president (forseti Íslands). Historically, Iceland's head of state also included the Danish monarch during the period of the personal union with Denmark, a monarch who was the nation's sovereign in a constitutional sense. Since Iceland's sovereignty in 1944, the term þjóðhöfðingja is rarely used to designate the current office; instead, one would refer to the forseti Íslands, or, for a monarch elsewhere, konungur or queen regnant. In comparative or scholarly contexts, however, the term can refer to heads of state across monarchies and republics.

Relation to government structure: The head of state is not always the head of government. In constitutional systems the head of state performs largely ceremonial duties, while the head of government handles policy and administration. Þjóðhöfðingja thus denotes the office of sovereignty rather than the daily functions of governance.
