úinnjí

úinnjí is a fictional term used in worldbuilding and speculative fiction to denote a social role that binds an individual to a community’s memory through oath and ritual. It does not refer to any real historical position.

The orthography resembles Gaelic-influenced spellings, with an initial ú and the acute accent. In the stories where it appears, scholars treat the form as a constructed compound, drawing on roots often glossed as “own” and “memory” or “image.”

A person described as úinnjí is traditionally entrusted with preserving oral histories, curating genealogies, and leading memory rites at significant life events, such as arrivals, transitions, and commemorations. The role is typically ceremonial as well as custodial, blending cultural memory with communal identity.

In narrative practice, úinnjí figures act as mediators between the living and those recalled in memory, guiding communities by recollection and lineage rather than by statute alone. They may interpret ancestral narratives to resolve contemporary questions, or perform rites that reaffirm belonging within the group.
