øjne is the Danish word for eyes. Eyes are the organs of vision, responsible for detecting light and color. In humans, eyes are complex structures that work by focusing light onto a light-sensitive tissue called the retina. The retina contains photoreceptor cells, rods and cones, which convert light into electrical signals. These signals are then transmitted to the brain via the optic nerve, where they are interpreted as images.

The human eye has several key components. The cornea, a transparent outer layer, refracts light. The iris, the colored part of the eye, controls the size of the pupil, regulating the amount of light entering the eye. The lens, located behind the iris, further focuses light onto the retina. The vitreous humor, a gel-like substance, fills the eyeball and maintains its shape.

Eyes vary greatly in appearance across different species, reflecting diverse adaptations for various environments and lifestyles. For example, some animals have eyes that are adapted for low-light conditions, while others possess exceptional color vision or the ability to detect ultraviolet light. The structure and function of eyes are fundamental to an animal's survival, enabling them to navigate, find food, avoid predators, and interact with their surroundings.
