Övergångsritualer, or rites of passage, are ceremonies or events marking an important stage in someone's life, signifying a transition from one phase of life to another. These rituals are found in virtually all cultures and societies throughout history and continue to be practiced today. They serve to acknowledge and legitimize significant personal and social changes.

Anthropologist Arnold van Gennep identified a common structure in these rituals, typically consisting of three phases: separation, transition, and incorporation. The separation phase involves the individual being detached from their previous status or group. The transition phase, often characterized by a period of liminality, is a state of ambiguity where the individual is no longer in their old role but has not yet assumed their new one. Finally, the incorporation phase sees the individual reintegrated into society with their new status or role recognized.

Examples of övergångsritualer include birth ceremonies, coming-of-age rituals like confirmation or bar mitzvah, weddings, and funerals. These events help individuals and their communities navigate these life changes, reinforcing social bonds and individual identity. The specific forms and meanings of these rituals vary greatly across different cultures, reflecting diverse beliefs, values, and social structures. They provide a framework for understanding and managing the inevitable transformations that occur throughout the human lifespan.
