Overbelichting is a Swedish term that translates to "overexposure" in English. It refers to the condition where a photograph or image is too bright, resulting in a loss of detail in the highlight areas. This can occur during the capture process if too much light strikes the sensor or film, or during post-processing if the image is brightened excessively.

In photography, overexposure can manifest as blown-out highlights, where pure white areas lack any discernible texture or color. This is because the sensor or film has reached its maximum capacity to record light, and any additional light cannot be differentiated. While some degree of overexposure might be intentional for creative effect, uncontrolled overexposure generally leads to a less desirable image.

Digital cameras often provide tools to help photographers avoid overexposure. The histogram, for instance, is a graphical representation of the tonal distribution in an image. A histogram skewed heavily to the right indicates overexposure. Many cameras also feature highlight warnings, which flash specific areas of the image on the screen when they are overexposed.

In other contexts, overbelichting can refer to the excessive lighting of a space, leading to discomfort or inefficiency. This is particularly relevant in architectural and interior design, where proper lighting levels are crucial for functionality and ambiance. Similar to photography, too much light in a physical space can be detrimental.
