This equilibrium is not necessarily tied to a fixed physical quantity but rather to a subjective feeling of satisfaction or satiation.

The idea suggests that animals, and potentially humans, will actively seek out or avoid stimuli based on their current state. If an organism is experiencing too little stimulation, it may engage in exploratory behavior, play, or other activities to increase sensory input. Conversely, if an organism is overstimulated, it might withdraw, rest, or seek quieter environments to reduce input. This drive for a balanced sensory experience influences a wide range of behaviors, from foraging patterns to social interactions.

For example, a young animal may engage in vigorous play to achieve a desired level of physical exertion and social interaction, then seek rest when this balance is met.
