Öljyäminen is the process of applying oil to a surface to reduce friction, provide lubrication, and protect against corrosion or wear. In Finnish usage, the term covers both mechanical lubrication of machines and components, and the use of oil as a finish for wood or other materials. The word derives from the noun oil (öljy).

In mechanical contexts, öljyäminen is routine maintenance for engines, gearboxes, bearings, and other moving parts. Oils reduce friction, dissipate heat, carry away contaminants, and form a protective film. Selection depends on load, speed, temperature, and environment. Common oil categories include mineral, synthetic, and vegetable oils; base stocks may be combined with additives such as anti-wear, anti-oxidants, and corrosion inhibitors. Application methods include manual lubrication, spray or drip, and centralized lubrication systems.

In woodworking and surface finishing, öljyäminen refers to applying oil as a protective and aesthetic finish. Oils like linseed, tung, or mineral oils penetrate the wood to enhance grain and provide water resistance. Finishing oiling is typically followed by wiping away excess oil to prevent stickiness.

Safety, maintenance, and quality considerations include cleaning surfaces before oiling, avoiding contamination with dirt, and ensuring correct viscosity and temperature. Over-lubrication can attract dust and cause leakage; under-lubrication can cause wear. Used oils should be disposed of properly, and oily rags can pose a fire risk. Proper storage and handling of oils reduce environmental impact and equipment damage.
