An õhukonditsioneer, commonly known as air conditioning, is a system or device that removes heat and controls humidity in the interior of a building or vehicle to achieve comfortable conditions. The primary function is to cool the air, but many units also provide heating, ventilation, and air filtration.

The basic principle of operation involves a refrigeration cycle. A refrigerant circulates through a system of coils. In the indoor unit, the refrigerant absorbs heat from the indoor air as it evaporates, cooling the air. This cooled air is then circulated back into the room. The heated refrigerant then travels to the outdoor unit, where it releases the absorbed heat into the outside air as it condenses. A fan in the indoor unit blows air over the cooling coils, and a fan in the outdoor unit expels the hot air.

They can also help to improve indoor air quality by filtering out dust, pollen, and other airborne particles.
