The ægløsningsfasen, also known as the ovulation phase, is a critical part of the female reproductive cycle. This phase occurs roughly in the middle of the menstrual cycle, typically around day 14 in a 28-day cycle, though this can vary significantly between individuals. The primary event of the ægløsningsfasen is the release of a mature egg, or ovum, from one of the ovaries. This release is triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH), which is itself preceded by a rise in estrogen levels.

Once released from the ovary, the egg travels into the fallopian tube, where it remains viable for fertilization for approximately 12 to 24 hours. If sperm are present in the fallopian tube during this window, fertilization can occur, leading to pregnancy. If fertilization does not happen, the egg will degenerate. The ægløsningsfasen is often characterized by changes in cervical mucus, which becomes thinner, clearer, and more elastic, resembling raw egg whites, to facilitate sperm transport. Some women may also experience mild abdominal pain, known as mittelschmerz, on the side of the ovary from which the egg was released. Understanding the ægløsningsfasen is essential for conception planning and for natural family planning methods.
