It refers to the planning, execution, and evaluation of actions intended to restore a system, community, or individual to a desired level of functionality after disruption. The concept is interdisciplinary and appears in contexts such as disaster risk management, infrastructure restoration, health rehabilitation, information technology, and environmental restoration.

In formal modeling, återhämtningsproblem is often formulated as an optimization or decision problem whose objective is to minimize recovery time, cost, or total loss while respecting constraints on resources, safety, and performance. Solutions commonly involve sequencing repair tasks, prioritizing interventions, and allocating scarce resources under uncertainty and over time. Methodologically it draws on operations research (linear and integer programming, dynamic programming), stochastic optimization, Markov decision processes, and simulation-based approaches. Many formulations treat it as a multi-objective problem that balances speed, cost, equity, and reliability.

Applications include designing restoration plans after natural disasters, planning supply-chain and critical infrastructure recovery, guiding rehabilitation programs in healthcare, and establishing data recovery and backup strategies in IT systems. The field also addresses resilience and preparedness, aiming to reduce vulnerability and speed up return to normal operation.
