It refers to the phenomenon of a sound source, often a voice or musical instrument, being perceived as if it were originating from a wider area than its actual physical location. This can occur due to various acoustic and perceptual factors.

One primary cause of ääniroiskeet is reverberation. When a sound bounces off surfaces in a room, echoes and reflections are created. These reflected sounds arrive at the listener's ears at slightly different times and from different directions, leading to a diffusion of the sound image.
