álverkun

Álverkun is a term used in some Scandinavian folklore to describe the process by which a person, usually a child, is replaced by a changeling or a malevolent spirit. This phenomenon is often associated with the hidden folk, or álfar, who were believed to be supernatural beings capable of interfering with human lives. The substitution was thought to occur when the álfar either desired the human child for themselves or wished to cause mischief.

The replaced child, known as an álverkingur or changeling, was often described as sickly, irritable, and possessing unusual or even monstrous features. These children were typically difficult to care for and were sometimes believed to be an imposter, unable to grow or thrive like a normal child. Parents might try various methods to discern if their child was an álverkingur and to reclaim their original offspring. These rituals often involved extreme measures, such as exposing the changeling to fire or iron, which were believed to be repellent to supernatural beings.

The belief in álverkun reflects a desire to explain the misfortunes and unexplained illnesses that afflicted children in pre-modern societies. It provided a framework for understanding infant mortality, developmental disabilities, and behavioral problems, attributing them to supernatural forces rather than natural causes. While the practice is rooted in folklore, it highlights the anxieties and beliefs of past cultures regarding the unknown and the perceived influence of the spirit world on human existence.
