Übungsgruppe

Übungsgruppe is a term used in German-speaking higher education to refer to a small, practice-oriented study group that meets outside regular lectures to work on exercises and problems under supervision. The group exists to reinforce learning by applying theory to concrete tasks and to provide targeted assistance.

In many German-speaking universities and faculties, Übungsgruppen accompany lecture courses (Vorlesung). They are typically led by a tutor or teaching assistant and may be attended by students enrolled in the corresponding course. Sessions are usually scheduled weekly or biweekly and last about 60 to 120 minutes. The tutor explains methods, demonstrates solution strategies, and guides participants through problem sets, often using collaborative work, examples, and mini-tutorials.

Formation and participation: Übungsgruppen can be mandatory or voluntary depending on the program. Participation may be tied to completing assignments or to completing the course with a particular grade. In some contexts, students register or are assigned to a group by the department.
