In its simplest form, it involves instructing a bank to move a specified amount of money from the payer's account to the payee's account.

The process typically begins with the payer initiating the transfer. This can be done in several ways, including through online banking portals, mobile banking apps, or by physically visiting a bank branch and filling out a transfer form. The payer provides essential details such as the payee's bank name, account number, and the amount to be transferred. Increasingly, the International Bank Account Number (IBAN) and the Bank Identifier Code (BIC) are used for international transfers to ensure accuracy and streamline processing.

Once initiated, the payer's bank verifies the details and debits the specified amount from the payer's account. The funds are then sent through a banking network to the payee's bank. The payee's bank receives the funds and credits them to the payee's account. The time it takes for the funds to appear in the payee's account can vary depending on factors such as the banks involved, the currency, and whether the transfer is domestic or international. Domestic transfers within the same country are often faster, sometimes even instant, while international transfers can take several business days.
