Öljyvedelmistä, also known as oil spills, are the release of a liquid petroleum hydrocarbon into the environment, especially the marine ecosystem. These events can occur naturally, such as through seeps from the ocean floor, but are most often caused by human activities. Major sources include oil extraction and transportation, such as tanker accidents, pipeline leaks, and blowouts at offshore drilling rigs. Smaller spills can also result from activities like refueling recreational boats or improper disposal of used motor oil.

The impact of oil spills on the environment is severe and far-reaching. Marine life is particularly vulnerable. Birds can lose their ability to fly and insulate themselves when their feathers are coated in oil, leading to hypothermia and starvation. Marine mammals can suffer from skin irritation, respiratory problems, and impaired thermoregulation. Fish and shellfish can be poisoned or their habitats destroyed. The oil can smother coral reefs and damage seagrass beds, which are crucial ecosystems.

Cleanup efforts for oil spills are complex and often challenging. Methods can include containment booms to limit the spread of oil, skimmers to remove oil from the water surface, dispersants to break up the oil into smaller droplets (though their use is debated due to potential ecological impacts), and in-situ burning. Manual cleanup by workers is also common, especially on shorelines. The long-term effects of oil spills can persist for years or even decades, affecting food chains and the overall health of affected ecosystems.
