Öljypohjustimet

Öljypohjustimet, often translated as oil primers or oil-based primers, are a type of primer coat used in painting and coating applications. They are formulated with oil-based resins as the binder, which are typically alkyds or modified oils. These primers are known for their excellent adhesion to various surfaces, particularly wood, metal, and previously painted surfaces. They are also effective at blocking stains, preventing bleed-through from knots in wood or tannins in certain woods, and creating a smooth, uniform surface for subsequent coats of paint.

The drying time for oil-based primers is generally longer than that of water-based (latex) primers, requiring more ventilation and potentially longer project timelines. However, this slower drying allows for better penetration into porous surfaces and a more durable, flexible film once cured. They are also known for their ability to seal chalking or chalky surfaces effectively. Due to their solvent-based nature, oil-based primers typically require mineral spirits or paint thinner for cleanup, unlike water-based primers which clean up with soap and water. This characteristic, along with their stronger odor, means they are often used in well-ventilated areas or for specific applications where their superior sealing and adhesion properties are paramount. They are a common choice for priming bare wood, especially problematic woods, and for priming metal surfaces prone to rust.
