Öljynäalyysi, often translated as oil analysis, is a diagnostic technique used to assess the condition of lubricants and the machinery they are in. By examining a sample of used oil, engineers and technicians can gain valuable insights into the internal health of equipment without the need for costly and disruptive disassembly.

The primary goals of oil analysis are to detect potential problems early, prevent catastrophic failures, optimize maintenance schedules, and extend the service life of both the lubricant and the machinery. This is achieved by monitoring various parameters within the oil sample. These parameters can include physical properties such as viscosity and color, chemical properties like TBN (Total Base Number) or TAN (Total Acid Number), and the presence and concentration of wear metals, contaminants, and fuel or coolant dilution.

Wear metals are particularly important as their presence and type can indicate specific components that are experiencing abnormal friction and abrasion. For instance, the detection of iron might point to issues with gears or bearings, while copper could suggest problems with bronze bushings or coolers. Contaminants like dirt, dust, or water can accelerate wear and degrade the lubricant's effectiveness.

Regular oil analysis allows for trend monitoring, which is crucial for identifying gradual changes that might otherwise go unnoticed. This proactive approach helps in scheduling maintenance interventions precisely when needed, rather than relying on fixed time intervals.
