Északihegység

Északihegység, also known as the Northern Mountains or Northern Range, is a mountain range located in northern Hungary. It is the highest mountain range in the country, with its highest peak, Kékes, reaching 1,014 meters (3,327 feet) above sea level. The Északihegység is characterized by its diverse landscapes, including rolling hills, deep valleys, and dense forests.

Geologically, the range is part of the larger North Hungarian Mountains, which are an extension of the Western Carpathians. The mountains are composed primarily of volcanic rock, including andesite and rhyolite, as well as sedimentary rocks like sandstone and limestone. This geological history has resulted in a rich variety of minerals and hot springs, many of which are utilized for therapeutic purposes.

The Északihegység is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. Hiking and cycling trails are abundant, offering stunning views of the surrounding countryside. The region is also known for its wine production, with several famous vineyards located on the southern slopes of the mountains. The climate is continental, with warm summers and cold winters, making it suitable for various seasonal activities.

The flora and fauna of the Északihegység are diverse, with many protected species found within its national parks and nature reserves. Forests are dominated by oak, beech, and pine trees.
