Åtkomstnätverk, also known as access networks, refers to the part of a telecommunications network that connects end-user devices to the core network. This network is responsible for delivering services like internet access, phone calls, and television to homes and businesses. The technology used in an access network can vary greatly, from traditional copper telephone lines to modern fiber optic cables and wireless solutions like 4G and 5G mobile networks. Fiber to the Home (FTTH), for instance, uses fiber optic cables directly to the subscriber's premises, offering very high bandwidth. Conversely, older technologies like Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) utilize existing copper phone lines, providing lower speeds. Wireless access networks provide connectivity without physical cables, often through cellular towers or Wi-Fi hotspots. The choice of access network technology depends on factors such as desired speed, cost, geographical availability, and the type of services being offered. It is a critical component for enabling digital communication and has evolved significantly to meet increasing demands for bandwidth and lower latency.
