Åklagarmyndighetens

Åklagarmyndigheten, or the Swedish Public Prosecution Authority, is a government agency responsible for prosecutorial activity in criminal cases in Sweden. It serves as the central body for directing prosecutors across the country, ensuring that investigations and prosecutions are conducted in a lawful, efficient, and uniform manner. The agency operates within the Swedish judicial system and falls under the Ministry of Justice, though prosecutors act independently when deciding whether charges should be brought.

The agency is headed by Riksåklagaren, the Public Prosecutor-General, who acts as the chief prosecutor and highest authority within the organization. It comprises regional public prosecutors and specialized units and works closely with the Police Authority, the courts, and other authorities to supervise investigations and prosecute crimes. Its responsibilities include deciding on charges, supervising and reviewing investigations, issuing indictments, providing legal guidance to investigators, and handling appeals in the courts. The Public Prosecution Authority also contributes to the development of prosecutorial standards and training.

A central principle guiding the agency is the rule of law and the impartial, independent exercise of prosecutorial power.
