Äänestämättömyys, known in English as voter turnout or abstention, refers to the phenomenon of eligible citizens choosing not to vote in elections. This can occur for a variety of reasons, ranging from personal disinterest and a lack of political engagement to deliberate protest against the political system or specific candidates. In some cases, practical barriers such as illness, travel, or restrictive voter registration laws can also contribute to abstention.
