Äänestystelit
Äänestystelit, or "voting steles," are a historical phenomenon found in some ancient societies, particularly in Greece. These were not physical objects but rather a conceptual or sometimes inscribed form of public declaration of preference, often in the context of elections or decisions made by assemblies. The term itself suggests a physical manifestation, perhaps a stone or wooden tablet, upon which votes were recorded or expressed. However, evidence suggests that the method of recording varied widely. In some cases, voters might have used tokens, pebbles, or marked objects to cast their ballots. In others, the act of speaking one's vote aloud or inscribing it on a publicly displayed surface could have constituted the "stel."
The purpose of äänestystelit was to ensure a transparent and verifiable process for collective decision-making. They
