Äänenvoimakkuudet refers to the perceived loudness of a sound. It is a subjective experience influenced by several physical factors, most notably the sound pressure level, but also by the frequency of the sound and the duration of its exposure. In acoustics, sound pressure level is the objective measurement of the intensity of a sound wave. This is typically measured in decibels (dB), where a higher decibel value generally corresponds to a louder sound.

However, human hearing is not equally sensitive to all frequencies. We are most sensitive to frequencies in the range of 2 to 5 kilohertz. Therefore, sounds at these frequencies can be perceived as louder than sounds with the same sound pressure level but at lower or higher frequencies. This phenomenon is accounted for in various weighting curves, such as the A-weighting, which is commonly used in noise measurements to better reflect how humans perceive loudness.

Duration also plays a role. A sound that is present for a longer period may be perceived as louder or more impactful than a brief sound of the same sound pressure level. The integration of sound energy over time is a factor in how our auditory system processes loudness. Furthermore, individual differences in hearing sensitivity and any existing hearing impairments can significantly affect the perceived loudness of sounds.
