Äänenmuodostus refers to the process by which sound is produced. In humans, this primarily involves the vocal cords, which are located in the larynx. When we speak, sing, or make other vocalizations, air is expelled from the lungs, passing through the trachea and into the larynx. This airflow causes the vocal cords to vibrate, creating sound waves. The pitch of the sound is determined by the tension and thickness of the vocal cords, as well as the speed of airflow. Higher tension and thinner cords, along with faster airflow, produce higher pitches.

Resonance plays a crucial role in shaping these initial sound waves into distinct speech sounds. The pharynx, oral cavity, and nasal cavity act as resonators, amplifying certain frequencies and dampening others. The shape and size of these cavities can be altered by the tongue, lips, and jaw, allowing for the articulation of vowels and consonants. For example, the position of the tongue affects the resonance of the oral cavity, distinguishing sounds like "ee" from "ah." Similarly, the movement of the lips forms different vowel sounds and is essential for producing consonant sounds like "p" or "m."
