Államvasutak
Államvasutak is a Hungarian term that translates to "State Railways." It generally refers to the national railway companies owned and operated by the Hungarian state. Historically, this has primarily been MÁV (Magyar Államvasutak Zrt.), which is the largest railway company in Hungary. MÁV is responsible for the majority of railway infrastructure and passenger and freight transport services within the country. The company's origins trace back to the mid-19th century, and it has undergone numerous transformations and restructurings throughout its history, particularly following periods of political and economic change in Hungary and Europe. Today, MÁV operates as a group of companies, with MÁV Zrt. as the parent company, overseeing infrastructure management and various operational subsidiaries. The state's involvement ensures the provision of essential public transportation services and the maintenance of the national rail network, which plays a significant role in connecting Hungarian cities and contributing to the country's logistics and economy.
