Ákvarðanatöku

Ákvarðanatöku is the process by which individuals, groups, and organizations select a course of action from among available alternatives. In Icelandic scholarship, the term encompasses everyday decisions as well as strategic policy choices and is studied across psychology, economics, political science, and organizational management.

Normative theories describe how decisions should be made to maximize value or satisfy stated goals, using frameworks such as rational choice and decision analysis. Descriptive theories examine how decisions are actually made, highlighting limitations of rationality (bounded rationality) and the tendency to satisfice rather than optimize.

Common models include the rational model, which assumes complete information and linear steps from problem recognition to implementation; and the bounded rationality model, which emphasizes cognitive constraints and satisficing. Other perspectives include incrementalism, satisficing, and dual-process theories of cognition.

Decision processes are influenced by cognitive biases, uncertainty, risk, group dynamics, and organizational structures. In group settings, phenomena such as groupthink or polarization can affect outcomes. Decision support tools—such as decision trees, cost-benefit analysis, and multi-criteria decision analysis—aid in structuring choices.

Applications span public policy, business strategy, personal life, and research. While the Icelandic term grounds the concept in local language, its theories and methods are widely used internationally to understand how choices are made and how to improve decision quality.
