The singular form ág azat is commonly translated as “sector” or “branch” in English.

In economic usage, ágazatok categorize activities according to their nature and role in the economy. A common taxonomy distinguishes three principal sectors: primary, secondary, and tertiary. The primary sector includes activities like agriculture, forestry, fishing, and mining. The secondary sector covers manufacturing and construction. The tertiary sector encompasses services such as trade, transportation, finance, health, education, and public administration.
