Zuzmókat, more commonly known as lichens, are fascinating composite organisms that arise from algae or cyanobacteria living among filaments of multiple fungi in a symbiotic relationship. This means both partners benefit from the association. The fungus provides a structure for the lichen to grow on and protects the photosynthetic partner from drying out and excessive light. In return, the alga or cyanobacterium produces food for the fungus through photosynthesis.

Lichens are remarkably hardy and can be found in diverse environments, from arid deserts and tropical rainforests to arctic tundra and even on the surfaces of rocks and trees in urban areas. Their ability to survive in extreme conditions is due to their slow growth rate, tough outer layer, and the efficient way they absorb water and nutrients directly from the air and rain.

These organisms play a significant role in many ecosystems. They are often pioneer species, colonizing bare rock and initiating soil formation. They also serve as a food source for various animals, including reindeer, and their presence or absence can be an indicator of air quality, as they are sensitive to pollution. Lichens exhibit a wide range of colors and forms, including leafy (foliose), shrubby (fruticose), and crusty (crustose) structures, making them visually distinctive elements of the natural world. Their slow growth and long lifespan mean that some lichens can be thousands of years old.
