Zooxanthellae is a colloquial term used to refer to dinoflagellate algae that live symbiotically within the tissues of various marine invertebrates, most notably corals. These single-celled organisms, belonging to the class Dinophyceae, are typically golden-brown in color due to the presence of photosynthetic pigments like chlorophylls and carotenoids. The symbiotic relationship is crucial for the survival of many reef-building corals and other sessile marine animals.

In this mutualistic partnership, the zooxanthellae reside within the gastrodermal cells of the host. Through photosynthesis, they convert sunlight into energy, providing the coral with a significant portion of its nutritional requirements, often up to 90%. These nutrients include carbohydrates, glycerol, and amino acids, which fuel the coral's metabolic processes, growth, and calcification. In return, the host animal offers the zooxanthellae a protected environment, shielding them from predators, and supplies them with essential compounds like carbon dioxide and nitrogenous waste products, which are necessary for photosynthesis.

The presence of zooxanthellae is also responsible for the vibrant colors of many corals. When corals expel their zooxanthellae, a phenomenon known as coral bleaching, they turn white because the underlying calcium carbonate skeleton becomes visible. This expulsion can be triggered by environmental stressors such as elevated sea temperatures, pollution, or increased light levels. While corals can recover from bleaching if the stressor is removed and the zooxanthellae return, prolonged bleaching can lead to coral mortality. Scientific research continues to explore the complex interactions and genetic diversity within zooxanthellae populations.
