Zonnparticleen, often translated as solar particles or solar energetic particles (SEPs), refers to high-energy charged particles that are accelerated by the Sun. These particles primarily consist of protons and electrons, but can also include heavier ions like helium and oxygen. They are typically ejected into space during solar flares and coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are explosive events on the Sun's surface and in its atmosphere.

The energy of these particles can vary significantly. Some are relatively low in energy, while others can be extremely energetic, approaching the energies of cosmic rays. When zonnparticleen are released, they travel outward from the Sun through interplanetary space. Their trajectory and intensity are influenced by the Sun's magnetic field and the interplanetary magnetic field.

The Earth's magnetosphere provides a significant degree of protection from these particles. However, during intense solar activity, large fluxes of zonnparticleen can overcome this shield, impacting the near-Earth space environment. These impacts can lead to a variety of phenomena, including disruptions to satellite operations, damage to electronic components, and increased radiation exposure for astronauts. On Earth, intense zonnparticleen events can enhance auroral displays, making them visible at lower latitudes. Scientists monitor solar activity and zonnparticleen events to predict and mitigate their potential effects on technology and space exploration.
