Zodiacal constellations are a group of constellations that lie along the ecliptic, which is the apparent path of the Sun across the sky over the course of a year. These constellations are significant in astrology, where they are believed to influence human personality and destiny. Historically, ancient cultures observed the stars and grouped them into patterns, attributing mythological stories and meanings to them. The zodiac as we know it today is largely based on the traditions of Hellenistic astrology.

As the Earth orbits the Sun, our perspective shifts, and different constellations become visible in the night sky. However, due to a phenomenon called the precession of the equinoxes, the constellations are no longer perfectly aligned with the astrological signs, which are based on fixed points in the sky. This means that the dates associated with each astrological sign do not perfectly correspond to the time the Sun is actually in its corresponding zodiacal constellation. Modern astronomy recognizes thirteen constellations along the ecliptic, including Ophiuchus, though it is not traditionally part of the zodiac.
