Zakrzep refers to a blood clot that forms within a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood. This condition, known as thrombosis, can occur in veins (venous thrombosis) or arteries (arterial thrombosis). A venous thrombosis, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT), typically forms in the legs and can lead to pain, swelling, and redness. If a DVT dislodges and travels to the lungs, it can cause a pulmonary embolism, a potentially life-threatening event. Arterial thrombosis, on the other hand, can obstruct blood flow to vital organs, potentially causing a heart attack if it occurs in the coronary arteries or a stroke if it affects the arteries supplying the brain.

The formation of a zakrzep is often attributed to a combination of factors, commonly referred to as Virchow's triad. These include abnormalities in blood flow (stasis), damage to the blood vessel wall (endothelial injury), and an increased tendency for blood to clot (hypercoagulability). Risk factors for developing a zakrzep can include prolonged immobility, surgery, certain medical conditions like cancer or autoimmune disorders, hormonal therapies, and a personal or family history of clotting disorders.

Diagnosis of a zakrzep often involves medical history, physical examination, and imaging tests such as ultrasound or venography. Treatment strategies aim to prevent the clot from growing larger and to reduce the risk of complications. Anticoagulant medications, often referred to as blood thinners, are commonly prescribed to prevent further clot formation and allow the body to dissolve existing clots. In some cases, thrombolytic therapy, which uses drugs to dissolve the clot directly, or surgical procedures may be necessary. Prevention of zakrzepy often involves strategies to minimize risk factors, such as maintaining physical activity, staying hydrated, and following medical advice after surgery.
