Yuechi, also known as *yue* (月) or *yueqin* (月琴), is a traditional Chinese bowed string instrument with a distinctive, delicate sound. Originating over a thousand years ago, it is one of the most iconic instruments in Chinese classical music, particularly associated with folk and court music traditions. The name "yue" translates to "moon," reflecting its crescent-shaped body, which resembles a half-moon, while "qin" means "stringed instrument," combining to form "yueqin."

The yuechi typically features a small, curved body made of wood, often paulownia or sandalwood, with a soundboard that amplifies the vibrations of its two or three silk or nylon strings. The instrument is held vertically, with the player resting it on the shoulder and using a horsehair bow to produce a soft, expressive tone. Its playing technique allows for both melodic and rhythmic versatility, making it suitable for solo performances, accompaniment, and ensemble music.

Yuechi music is deeply rooted in Chinese culture, often accompanying storytelling, poetry recitals, and ceremonial rituals. It has also influenced other East Asian musical traditions, including those of Korea (*ayak* or *yayak*) and Japan (*yatsuhashi*).
